History Of The Bottoms Mill Shop
Bottoms Mill was established originally as a Cotton Mill in 1853 and was successfully run for 60+ years by William Dugdale and John Mills. Latterly the Dugdale Family
In 1919 the Mill was purchased by the Cockroft family and continued as a Mule Spinning and Weaving Mill until the Second World War, during which time it was used to store ammunition.
After the War the weaving side of the business continued until the 1990's and then on a much smaller scale until Gordon Rigg bought the Mill, making it one of the last local Mills to cease trading as a Cotton Mill.
In 2003 the Mill was aquired by Mr Gordon Rigg and converted into a Millshop and Cafe as an extention to the Garden Centre just across the road.
The Millshop and Cafe have been subsequently refurbished and extended and have both been very popular with visitors.
